Baby Adoption Showers
By Jimmy Sturo
If you know a couple who are in the process of adopting a baby and who are most likely to bring home their new bundle of joy very soon, one of the best ways to celebrate the new addition to their family is to throw them a baby shower. This is because, as with having their own child, adopting a child also provides couples with the same joy that comes with being parents.
However, given the “special” circumstances surrounding the new addition to their family, there are some very important considerations that you should look into when you plan for the baby shower. Doing so can help you and your friends to properly celebrate, with utmost sensitivity to the situation, the joy that the baby will bring to the new parents.
Things to consider
One of the many different things that you need to consider in planning the baby shower is whether or not the new parents would actually want to have one. Some couples may prefer not to announce their adoption.
If they do want a party, another important consideration is when it would take place. This is also very important, as some parents may want to spend a few weeks to settle in with their new child first.
Another important consideration is the type of gifts that the guests should bring. As much as possible, you should ask the guests to the shower to bring gifts that are considered “safe” for adoptive parents, which include diapers, feeding items, and nursery décor. In relation to this, it would also be a good idea to ask the would-be parents to register their child in a baby registry so that the guests can have a better idea of what gifts to bring.
Never do this
Adoption is still a sensitive issue. Be very sensitive. It is very important, for example, that you avoid playing games that are meant for pregnant women, like the game “How Big is Mom’s Tummy.”
